Glory of Goddess Durga

Goddess Durga is one of the most revered and celebrated deities in Nepal, embodying strength, courage, and the protective power of the divine feminine. Her glory resonates throughout the country, but nowhere more intensely than in the sacred regions surrounding Kalinchowk in Dolakha.
Mythological Significance
Ancient Hindu scriptures describe Goddess Durga as the collective manifestation of divine energy, created by the gods to defeat the powerful demon Mahishasura. Armed with weapons from each deity, she represents the triumph of righteousness over darkness — a story retold in ritual and celebration every year during Dashain.
"She is not just a goddess — she is the force that holds the balance of creation. Devotees do not merely worship her; they become part of her story."
Goddess Durga at Kalinchowk
The Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple is dedicated to a form of Goddess Kali — an avatar of Durga in her most fierce and powerful manifestation. Pilgrims trek or take the cable car to the summit to offer prayers, flowers, and sindoor (vermillion), believing the goddess grants protection, blessings for marriage, and healing.
The atmosphere at the temple during festivals is electric — bells ring continuously, incense smoke drifts across the mountain air, and the chanting of mantras echoes from the stone walls.
Dashain — The Great Festival
- Dashain is the most important festival in Nepal, spanning 15 days in autumn (September–October).
- The first nine days (Navaratri) are dedicated to worshipping nine forms of Goddess Durga.
- Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day, marks the victory of good over evil and is celebrated with family gatherings and blessings.
- Kalinchowk Temple sees its largest pilgrimage numbers during Dashain and Navaratri.
