Kalinchowk Bhagwati Temple

Kalinchowk Temple, perched high in the Dolakha district at an altitude of approximately 3,800 metres, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Nepal. The temple draws thousands of devotees, trekkers, and tourists every year — a place where spirituality and natural beauty exist in rare harmony.
Architecture & Sacred Design
The main shrine follows traditional Nepali pagoda architecture with intricately carved wooden lattice windows and stone foundations. The idol of Goddess Kali — also known as Kalinchowk Bhagwati — is enshrined at the summit, radiating an energy that pilgrims describe as immediate and overwhelming.
The approach path to the temple winds through rhododendron forests and open ridgelines with views that stretch across the Himalayan range on clear days. The journey itself is considered an act of devotion.
Best Time to Visit
Kalinchowk is accessible year-round, but each season offers a different experience.
- Winter (December–February): Snow blankets the summit, creating an otherworldly landscape. The temple in snow is deeply revered by devotees.
- Dashain Festival (October): The most vibrant time, with colourful rituals, music, and thousands of pilgrims arriving from across Nepal.
- Spring (March–May): Rhododendrons bloom in vivid pink and red, making the trail to the temple visually stunning.
- Monsoon (June–September): Misty clouds roll through the valley — ethereal, but trails can be slippery.
Cable Car & Trekking
A cable car connects the lower town to near the temple summit, offering a scenic 15-minute ride with panoramic views. For those who prefer to walk, a trekking path through the forest takes approximately 2 hours from Charikot and is a peaceful alternative.
